Black Thunder Coal Mine and Los Alamos National Laboratory Experimental Study of Seismic Energy Generated by Large Scale Mine Blasting

چکیده
In an attempt to better understand the impact that large mining shots will have on verifying compliance with the international, worldwide, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT, no nuclear explosion tests), a series of seismic and videographic experiments has been conducted during the past two years at the Black Thunder Coal Mine. Personnel from the mine and Los Alamos National Laboratory have cooperated closely to design and perform experiments to produce results with mutual benefit to both organizations. This paper will summarize our activities, highlighting the unique results of each. Topics which were covered in these experiments include: 1) Synthesis of seismic, videographic, acoustic, and computer modeling data to improve understanding of shot performance and phenomenology; 2) Development of computer generated visualizations of observed blasting techniques; 3) Documentation of azimuthal variations in radiation of seismic energy from overburden casting shots (See companion paper by Pearson et al this issue); 4) Identification of, as yet unexplained, out of sequence, simultaneous detonation in some shots using seismic and videographic techniques; 5) Comparison of local (0.1 to 15 kilometer range) and regional (100 to 2000 kilometer range) seismic measurements leading to determination of the relationship between local and regional seismic amplitude to explosive yield for overburden cast, coal bulking and single fired explosions (See companion paper by Stump et al this issue); and 6) Determination of the types of mining shots triggering the prototype International Monitoring System for the CTBT (See companion paper by Stump et al this issue).

A comparison between effects of earthquake and blasting on stability of mine slopes: a case study of Chadormalu open-pit mine
Dynamic slope stability in open-pit mines still remains a challenging task in the computational mining design. Earthquake and blasting are two significant sources of dynamic loads that can cause many damages to open-pit mines in active seismic areas and during exploitation cycles. In this work, the effects of earthquake and blasting on the stability of the NW slope of Chadormalu mine are compar...
متن کاملStudying Peak Particle Velocity Due to Blast in Development Tunnels’ Face in Coal Stoping
The impact of blast-driven shocks on the safety and stability of the underground coal mines has been well established. The seismic imperfections resulting from blasting depend on the total explosive energy released during blasting and the closeness of the development tunnel face to the stope face. Also, the quality of the rock mass wherein the whole stope face is located might pose considerable...
متن کاملPrediction of Seismic Wave Intensity Generated by Bench Blasting Using Intelligence Committee Machines
In large open pit mines prediction of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) provides useful information for safe blasting. At Sungun Copper Mine (SCM), some unstable rock slopes facing to valuable industrial facilities are both expose to high intensity daily blasting vibrations, threatening their safty. So, controlling PPV by developing accurate predictors is essential. Hence, this study proposes improv...
متن کاملBlast Design for Improved Productivity using a Modified Available Energy Method
In this work, a new drilling and blasting design methodology is introduced and applied at a case study mine to improve productivity. For the case study copper mine, a blast diameter of 203 mm is proposed to be used in the ore zone to meet the new required production rate of 90mtpa from 75mtpa. Currently, the Konya and Walter’s model is used to generate drilling and blasting design at a bl...
متن کاملA new mining method
The conventional practice in open cut coal strip mining has been to blast the overburden or coal layers in separate blast events. This is done in order to maximise the benefits from throw blasting and also to limit coal losses. Each blast event usually has a particular design of hole diameters, burdens and spacings, explosive charges and blast timing in order to achieve the required blast outco...
